Mindfully Closing Cycles

September 25, 2017

The recent Fall Equinox brought us transition and change.

From one season to another. From one cycle to the next. This brought to mind the significance of mindfully closing cycles.

What does it mean to close a cycle?
When we begin a task, make a commitment, or engage in a relationship we open an energetic container. We are mentally and emotionally invested.

Why is it significant to close containers? As long as the container is open, it occupies space. Consider how the stress of an incomplete task or goal hangs heavy in the back of your mind. As does indecision. As does a stale goal or a relationship in limbo. ⠀

You may close cycles daily, weekly, monthly, annually, seasonally or even once or twice in a life time.

When we close cycles mindfully, we become aware of what in our life has come to an end, or requires completion. We then offer our full attention and act with intention as we begin to close them. Here are a few suggestions.

1. PRACTICE cultivating awareness about closing small cycles daily (hello mono-tasking and finishing what you started).

2. CELEBRATE Completions. Especially if you have completed a goal you have been working towards.

3. HONOR larger and significant transitions. If you are in the midst of a life change (an end of a relationship, or in a big move to a new home or job), take time to honor your feelings. Make space for grief, for reflection, excitement or fear.

4. CRAFT A CLOSING CEREMONY. Rituals are simply intentional actions that are meaningful in practice. Consider what intentional actions would honor your transition best.

When we close cycles we liberate ourselves to move on and move forward freely. I'd love to hear suggestions.

  • How do you honor the completion of a cycle?

Thank you for taking the time to journey with me today.
